Sea Cucumber Farmers Concerned Over Proposed Palm Oil Processing Plant
20/04/2012 (Bernama) - Kampung Hujung sea cucumber farmers in Jambongan Island have expressed concern over the plan by a company to set up a palm oil processing plant on the island, saying the move would affect their livelihood.
About 70 farmers are involved in the activity, a programme under the state Fisheries Department.
One of the farmers, Bitting Muniran, said their farms have shown good progress so far, with the first harvest expected next month.
He said the proposed palm oil processing plant could cause pollution to the surrounding areas and affect the marine life there.
"Most of us on this island are fishermen, and the sea is our source of income and food," he told Bernama, here.
