24/03/2012 (New Straits Times) - The 1Malaysia Biomass Alternative Strategy (1MBAS) initiative will ensure that the nation and local companies   fully benefit from the opportunities created by developing high-value products from biomass. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who launched the initiative yesterday at Parliament House, said 1MBAS would be coordinated by the Malaysian Innovation Agency, which would serve as a one-stop reference centre managing all  government activities      relating to biomass utilisation in various sectors.

"1MBAS will also monitor activities related to the recently launched National Biomass Strategy 2020 by the Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry.

"The ministry will be looking into how Malaysia can maximise the potential of its palm oil industry biomass."

Najib said among the objectives of 1MBAS were to focus and strengthen the implementation of the  biomass strategy to other sources of biomass, including forestry, municipal waste and rubber and to align stakeholders, such as public and private sectors, towards a common goal.

Other priority areas for 1MBAS are to encourage local companies to invest in the industry and attract foreign companies to invest in Malaysia and partner with local companies.

Najib said 1MBAS would report its progress to the plantation industries and commodities minister and Pemandu, the steering committee formed to oversee the implementation and assess progress of the Economic Transformation Programme and the Government Transformation Programme.

"To achieve this aspiration, it is crucial for 1MBAS to work with relevant agencies and ministries to present a streamlined approach to the industry and academia."
