22/02/2012 (New Straits Times) - An oil palm farmer from Parit Pechah in Muar has invented an organic fertiliser  using the kernel and flesh of the oil palm fruit.

According to the inventor Bajuri Tahir, 62, the fertiliser is able to boost fruit yield and strengthen oil palm trees.

"The powdery fertiliser has to be  mixed with water before it is sprayed onto the base of the trees," he said.

"The  plants will be healthier  and the fruit bunches will be heavier up to five times," he said. "Using this fertiliser, the oil palm bunch which usually weighs an average of 10 kg,  could weigh up to 50kg."

Bajuri uses his fertiliser at his  four-hectare farm since three months ago and was happy with the results. He added that it can also be used on other plants.

He  is now working with the Muar district agriculture office and the Malaysiam Palm Oil Board to commercialise the production of the fertiliser.

"Using the fertiliser can also cut costs as only two sprayings are required a month," he said.

Bajuri said he plans to sell his fertiliser at RM20 per packet which is enough for 50 trees.

"Usually, the oil palm fruit is processed to extract its oil while the flesh is made into animal feed. Now, I have found a new use for it."
