March 20, 2005 OTTAWA (CP) - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warnedpeople Thursday not to consume certain Heritage brand Palm Oils becausethey may contain a non-permitted colour that has been associated withcancer.

Heritage brand Palm Oil, a product of Ghana, is sold in a 500 millilitre,two-litre or four-litre container. The affected product does not bear aUPC or lot code.

Heritage brand Zomi Palm Oil, a product of Ghana, is sold in a 500millilitre, two-litre or four-litre container. The affected product doesnot bear a UPC or lot code.

The importer is voluntarily recalling these products from the marketplace.The affected products have been distributed in Ontario, Saskatchewan andAlberta, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Thursday.

The products are not associated with the ongoing recall in the UnitedKingdom.

The warning was issued over concerns they could contain Sudan I and IV reddyes. They are not permitted as food colours in Canada, the agency said ina news release.

Sudan I has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and thesefindings could also be significant for human health, the agency said.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption ofthese products.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is monitoring the effectiveness of therecall.
