Sustainable Palm Oil Procurement \'Never Easier\'

25/11/2011 (Purcon) It has never been easier for organisations to adopt sustainable palm oil procurement policies, but time is running out if these are to have an effect.

This is the view of Adam Harrison, senior policy officer for WWF UK and the environmental charity's representative on the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Executive Board.

"All companies, even some of the top performers, need to move faster," he said as the WWF Palm Oil Buyers' Scorecard 2011 was published.

It shows 25 UK-based companies are amongst many in Europe, Australia and Japan that are buying more certified sustainable palm oil than ever before.

However, the scorecard shows that under than half of the palm oil used by all the companies scored is sustainable.

"The leading companies in the scorecard demonstrate that it is possible to source certified sustainable palm oil to cover all of their palm oil usage," added Mr Harrison.

A recent Greenpeace investigation into one Indonesian palm oil producer, Sinar Mas, prompted a number of large companies to cut ties with the firm amid concerns over deforestation.
