23/11/2011 (Channel 6 News Online) - Indonesian police arrested two men on Monday for allegedly killing dozens of monkeys and orangutans in the province of East Kalimantan, the Jakarta Post reported on Tuesday.

Police arrested the two palm oil plantation workers in the village of Puan Cepak in the regency of Kutai Kartanegara. The suspects claimed they were paid to kill the animals under orders from a supervisor, the report said.

"They received Rp 200,000 ($22) to kill a monkey and Rp 1 million ($111) for an orangutan," National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution told the Jakarta Post.

The suspects claimed that they killed more than 20 orangutans and monkeys between 2008 and 2010. However, police believe the actual number of slaughtered animals is significantly higher.

Among items taken into evidence by investigators were photographs of the slain animals and buried bones unearthed near the plantation. Police are still considering the arrest of the supervisors, Saud said.

The suspects face five years in jail and 100 million Indonesian rupiahs ($11,100) in fines.
