06/07/2011 (Borneo Post) - The newly-appointed People’s Republic of China’s Consul-General Li Shu Gang is looking forward to promoting greater trade and commerce between his homeland and Malaysia, particularly Sarawak.

WELCOME TO SARAWAK: Li (right) is welcomed by Lu and other members of the Chinese Federation.

“Sarawak has many potential in terms of natural resources and businesses. During my tenure as the consul-general, my focus will be on trade between the two countries,” he said yesterday.

Some areas in which he plans to look into include oil palm plantation and infrastructure development.

He also hinted at the possibility of a Chinese bank setting up its presence here but did not give further details as the plan had not been finalised.

Li was welcomed by members of the Federation of Kuching-Samarahan Division Chinese Associations, led by its president Lu Kim Yong, when he arrived at the Kuching International Airport.

“This is my first time to Malaysia and my first impression when I got off the plane was…it’s hot here.

“Before coming, I’ve heard many good things about the Chinese community here being very warm and hospitable people, so I really look forward to working closely with them.”

Li pledged that he would upkeep and promote the existing good Malaysia-China bilateral ties and hoped for continuous support from the local communities.

Meanwhile, Lu said the presence of the Chinese consulate-general had been a mutually beneficial arrangement for many years.

“It has been a very good arrangement as it is convenient to our local people because through the Chinese consulate, there is more understanding about the economic market in China as well as better cultural exchange.

“Besides, it also encourages and promotes Chinese investment to Sarawak, which helps boost the state economy”

Li, 58, succeeds Consul-General Xie Fugen who finished his 4-year tenure in May this year. He will commence his duties by paying courtesy visits to the various Chinese associations here.
