Indonesia has 21 billionaires: Forbes
03/12/2010 (The Jakarta Post), Jakarta - Indonesia now has 21 billionaires - up from 12 in 2009, according to Forbes Indonesia magazine.
Forbes Indonesia chief Justin Doebele said on Friday that the collective wealth of Indonesia's 40 richest people topped US$71 billion, a significant increase from $42 million last year.
"Indonesia has done well this year and so have the 40 richest. For example, Indonesia’s stock market, one of the world's best performing this year, boosted the wealth of many on the list," Doebele said.
Economic growth and a boom in commodity prices such as palm oil and coal also led to the spike in billionaires, he added.
Brothers R. Budi Hartono and Michael Hartono, owners of Bank Central Asia and clove cigarette maker PT Djarum, topped the list with a net worth US$11 billion, up from $7 billion last year.
Also on the top 10 list of the richest Indonesian were Susilo Wonowidjojo, Eka Tjipta Widjaja, Martua Sitorus, Anthoni Salim, Sri Prakash Lohia, Low Tuck Kwong, Peter Sondakh, Putera Sampoerna and Aburizal Bakrie.
