UK productions of rapeseed to be boosted by sustainable palm oil for bakers

16/06/2010 (Guttridge) - A sustainable variation of palm oil that has been created for British bakers could lead increased business for rapeseed oil producers.

Akofluid is the brain child of UK-based AAK, part of AarhusKarlshamn group, and promises to provide commercial bakers meet the growing consumer demand for environmentally-friendly fats and oil in their food, fnbnews reports.

Unlike conventional palm oil, the product is blended with rapeseed oils, which can me mass produced in countries such as the UK.

In addition, to the obvious environmental benefits of cutting palm oil production, Akofluid could boost the Britain’s capacity of extracting of oil from rape.

Spokesperson Judith Murdoch told the news provider it is the product that many bakers and food manufacturers have been waiting for.

"Not only does it offer several clear benefits, including saturated fat reduction, but it also means they can show consumers they are playing their part in tackling the problems associated with unsustainable palm oil," she commented.

AAK has been supplying food manufacturers with produce certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil since November 2008.
