Sainsbury\'s to plant two million trees
10/07/2010 (Edie Newsroom) - A supermarket chain is to plant two million trees over the next five years as part of new environmental drive.
The 'sustainabili-tree' strategy is divided into three separate areas. Firstly, 'plant' new trees so the supermarket is 'doing its bit' to increase forest cover.
Secondly, 'preserve' existing trees by setting stretching targets for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) timber and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified sustainable palm oil conversions.
And, 'conserve' raw materials by reducing the amount of packaging Sainsbury's use and stepping up its commitment to recycling.
Chief executive, Justin King, said: "Trees are at the centre of our food chain, so if we are to continue selling food of the variety and quality that we do, it is vital that we think long-term and protect a key raw material."
