Greenpeace encourages sustainable oil palm planting system in Indonesia

11/05/2010 (People's Daily China) - An Indonesian senior official said that Greenpeace is willing to promote Indonesian palm oil plantation that exercises sustainable planting system, local media reported here on Tuesday.

Speaking after witnessing a meeting between Agricultural Minister Suswono and Greenpeace representative at the minister's office on Monday, Plantation Director General at the ministry Ahmad Mangga Barani said that Greenpeace is not adhered to anti- oil palm plantation.

"What they have been fight for is the deforestation acts. They don't criticize palm oil industry. What they fight for is the deforestation acts," Ahmad was quoted by the Bisnis Indonesia as saying.

Citing to substance of the meeting, Ahmad said that Greenpeace urged the minister to take firm action against oil palm plantations that apparently failed to exercise sustainable planting system and those committing deforestation in the country.

In other part, Ahmad said that Greenpeace also pledged its support for Indonesian palm oil plantation that uses sustainable planting system, would help promote such plantations to international community.

Greenpeace has been a staunch critics on Indonesian palm oil firms it considered exercising unruly practices in expanding their plantations that eventually damaging the forest, biodiversity and environments around their operation sites.

Indonesia has been the world's largest palm oil producer with worldwide markets.
