Wild elephants attack oil palm plantation in Indon

5/9/05 (People's Daily) - A herd of 50 wild elephants destroyed around 500hectares of oil palm and rubber plantations in Muko-Muko district,Bengkulu province, Indonesia, over the past week.

The wild elephants attacked oil palm and rubber plantations at any time atnight, Antara news agency quoted Maskur, a resident of Pondok Suguhvillage, as saying on Monday.

He said the wild elephants' attacks which had been escalating in the pastweek would destroy the huts of the local people on the plantations.

As the local people had difficulty driving away the wild elephants fromthe plantations, The Muko-Muko district administration is asking forassistance from the Provincial Natural Resources Conservation Agency(BKSDA), said the report.
