11/05/2009 (The Jawa Report), United Kingdom - In hairy ape news, Britain's energy providers are soon to be putting a squeeze on orangutans and other animals on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.

Plans are in the works to use palm oil, from plantations carved out of the rain forest, as a biofuel for power plants.

Conservationists and environmental groups have expressed concerns regarding the palm oil plan. Ironically, palm oil biofuel for electricity generation is considered to be an environmental initiative. Nevertheless, a Greenpeace spokesman said palm oil could be worse than fossil fuels.

In other news, an orangutan escaped from the Adelaide Zoo in Australia after shorting out an electric fence and making a ladder. And in Germany, an orangutan learned to whistle and has recorded a CD which goes on sale next month.
