07/01/2008 (The Star Online), Nilai - The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry enforcement officers raided a supermarket in Taman Semarak here and seized over 3,000 packets of cooking oil worth RM8,000 hidden in a store room yesterday.

The supermarket, a major supplier of cooking oil here, had allegedly hidden 3,140 packets of cooking oil priced at RM7.50 each and 54 five kg bottles on the second floor of the premises.

He had put up a notice saying that customers were limited to two 5kg bottles of cooking oil each but the rack was empty as he claimed there was no supply.

State Consumer Affairs, Plantation and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk T. Rajagopalu regretted that there were wholesalers and retailers who took advantage of the cooking oil shortage to profit excessively from the people.

“They only display the expensive cooking oil while the cheaper ones are hidden. Most people cannot afford to buy the expensive cooking oil. Wholesalers like these are unethical and must be dealt with severely,” he said.

Rajagopalu wants the wholesaler charged in court and his business licence suspended. -Bernama-
