GREENPEACE DELAYS PALM OIL SHIP
19/11/2007 (Maritime Global Net) - ENVIRONMENTAL activcits hel up the sailing of a palm oil tanker from Dumai, Indonesia as protest against the increase palnting of oil palm on former peat and rainforest. With a banner reading 'Palm Oil Kills Forests and Climate', Greenpeace's vessel Rainbow Warrior was anchored next to 40,293 dwt, Liberian-flag tanker Westama, tanker blocking it from leaving port.
The ship eventually moved from its loading berth on Sunday. Greenpeaces says it carried out the stunt to draw attention to the issue of palm oil
Sue Connor, Greenpeace International forests campaigner on board the Rainbow Warrior. "The logging, draining and burning of Indonesia’s peatland forests releases a massive amount of stored carbon back to the atmosphere. This contributes to Indonesia being the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases on the planet. That's why we're here.” She added: “In less than three weeks time, Indonesia is also going to host a meeting in Bali where governments will decide their next steps on climate change. Commitment to zero deforestation is one of the things that needs to come out of that meeting.”
