Indonesia Ensures El Niño Won't Take Toll on Palm Oil Production

01/09/2026 (Jakarta Globe), Karawang - Indonesia said Monday it would ensure the drier dry spells from El Niño would not take a severe toll on Indonesia's palm oil production as the country made up the world's largest supply of this agricultural commodity.

Agricultural Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman admitted Monday that El Niño would have "some influence" on the production.

"But we hope the impact will not be as significant," Amran said.

To boost production, the government will make sure that the fertilizers for palm oil plantation get distributed on time. Indonesia has readied crop maintenance and pest control to deal with the effects of the drought.

"We must prevent fertilizer shortages," Amran said.

He also proposed irrigation plans for mature palm oil plantations.

Indonesia's palm oil production neared 30.3 million tons in the first half of 2026, according to palm oil producer group Gapki. This marked an increase from the 27.9 million tons production seen in the same period the previous year. About 27.7 million tons seen in January-June 2026 were crude palm oil. Exports were close to 16.6 million tons in volume, and amounted to around $19.4 billion.
