Reuters (25/05/2026) - KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Reuters) - Malaysia has secured enough energy supplies to last until the end of July amid disruptions arising from the war in Iran, ‌the economy minister said on Monday, citing data from state energy firm Petronas.

Malaysia's existing power supply reserves were also sufficient to meet current increases in demand, minister Akmal Nasir told a regular briefing.

  • Akmal said shipping costs to the Middle East have surged between 50% to 80%, while insurance premiums due to the war have risen up to 3%.
  • He flagged risks to Malaysia's commodities sector due to increasing logistics costs, saying the value of the sector declined by 14.7% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to a year ago, due to lower exports of major products such ‌as cocoa, rubber, palm oil and timber.
  • Total agricultural commodity exports are forecast to decline by 13.48% to 170.2 billion ringgit ($43 billion) in 2026, while imports are expected to decrease by 3.28% to 72.47 billion ringgit, Akmal said.
  • The commodities ministry has been advised to explore shipments of palm oil products to other countries to ensure trade diversification and maintain Malaysia's export competitiveness, Akmal added.
  • He also said the country's aviation sector is facing significant pressure, with daily passenger flights declining 31.5% decline in April following cancellations and reroutes from the Middle East.
