‘Show MyKad, buy cooking oil’ an idea still

24/07/2022 (The Star Online), Petaling Jaya - There is yet to be a decision by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry on the use of MyKad for the purchase of subsidised cooking oil.

Deputy Minister Datuk Rosol Wahid said using MyKad to curb abuse of the subsidised cooking oil was just an idea that the ministry was currently looking at.

“No, we haven’t (decided on using MyKad to buy subsidised cooking oil). That is just among the suggestions that we are currently discussing,” he told Sunday Star.

The ministry recently had discussions with packet cooking oil production retailers.

It was reported that the retailers were told to record the customers’ names, identity card numbers and phone numbers of those who bought subsidised cooking oil.

This comes following the sudden increase in the price of cooking oil despite the country being the world’s second largest producer of palm oil. The government has continued subsidising the 1kg cooking oil in polybags.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob previously said the government was looking at formulating targeted subsidies to ensure the assistance provided would be received by the deserving groups.

Ismail Sabri had also said the government was in the midst of combating smuggling activities involving subsidised items, such as cooking oil, at the industrial level and at national borders
