Minister Wants To See Millionaire Public-sector ResearchersKUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- The Minister of Primary IndustriesDatuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik hopes to see Malaysia Palm Oil Board (MPOB)researchers becoming millionaires one day through the collection ofroyalties on the commercial application of their research and development(R&D) work.

Since the incentives for public-sector researchers were introduced in1999, there have yet to be any researcher (in MPOB) reaching anywhere nearthe RM1 million a year mark in terms of royalty collections, he said atthe opening of the MPOB Transfer of Technology Seminar 2001 in Bangitoday.

Under the incentive system, researchers whose R&D findings arecommercialised, get to keep 50 percent of the royalties collected, subjectto a maximum of RM360,000 a year or RM500,000 for a one-off payment.
