UCTS researching affordable oil palm waste shredder
10.10.2019 (The Borneo Post) - SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) is working to design and develop an affordable oil palm waste shredder to produce palm fibre from oil palm fronds (OPF) and empty fruit bunches (EFB).
In a press release yesterday, UCTS said shredding is the most typical preliminary process in modern treatment of EFB and OPF as it functions to reduce the waste size and extract residue oil/water content.
Moisture content and palm fibre length are the two elements that determine the value of the fibre.
The selling price of oil palm fibre falls within RM400 to RM600 per tonne depending on its length and dryness, while the value of final products made from the fibre will also be enhanced multiple times.
EFB and OPF are the most abundant solid waste generated from palm oil mills and oil palm plantations respectively.
In order to develop or improvise treatment methods of EFB and OPF, their crucial characteristics need to be studied and acknowledged as these parameters own the potential to affect the design considerations of waste treatment machine or methodology in advance.
UCTS also provides sales and services related to agricultural waste shredding.
