PM Lee in Bangkok for Asean summit, Government & Economy
The Hilltop Monitor (26/06/2019) - After the retreat, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha taking over ASEAN alternate chairmanship held a press conference which highlighted the outcomes of the 34th ASEAN Summit, statements, future tasks, challenges and bilateral agreements between countries.
According to a Bernama report, the King said that the football governing bodies from Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam have expressed their interest in a joint bid for the global sporting event.
Experts have cast doubts over what progress the 10-country group could make on the matter.
They also agreed to encourage integrated land-to-sea approaches to prevent and reduce marine debris, strengthen their respective legislation and intensify regional and worldwide cooperation, including dialogs on policies and exchanges of information.
They will also "strengthen national laws and regulations as well as enhance regional and worldwide cooperation including on relevant policy dialogue and information sharing".
A "Bangkok Declaration" on combatting marine waste was also endorsed at the weekend summit, though environmentalists argued it does not do enough to reduce the region's mounting plastic problem.
But trade will take centre stage with ASEAN leaders keen to hasten the signing of a China-drafted commercial deal covering around half the world's population.
Seen as an antidote to the protectionist policies of the current U.S. government, the RCEP will involve up to 45 percent of the global population and is potentially valued at more than a third of the world's gross domestic product (GDP).

Prayut also urged the region to complete the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations in 2019.
In this regard, he said ASEAN-led mechanisms can serve as platforms for dialogue and implementation of Indo-Pacific cooperation.
First proposed by China, RCEP's 16 signatories comprise the 10 ASEAN member states and six Asia-Pacific countries, including major economies China, India, Japan and South Korea.
As Vietnam will hold the ASEAN Chair in 2020, in his speech, PM Phuc underlined the need for sustained solidarity and unity in ASEAN, calling on the member nations to step up intra-bloc economic connectivity, trade and investment, and maintain a fair, open and rules-based multilateral trade system effectively adapted to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Federation Internationale de Football Association usually selects the country years in advance, and the 2026 event will go to the North American continent, with the United States, Canada and Mexico joint hosts.
Regarding the East Sea issue, the PM said the negotiations on building a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) between ASEAN and China has seen progress, towards the early completion of the document in line with worldwide law.
"There is real risk that developments on the ground - or more precisely at sea - are far outpacing the COC's progress thereby possibly rendering it irrelevant", said Marty Natalegawa, a former foreign minister of Indonesia.
