18/01/2017 (Bernama) - Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad has vowed to frequently go down to the ground to ensure that the welfare and agenda to uplift the 112,635 settlers is achieved.

He said the main focus was to find solutions to whatever problems the Felda settlers had, in line with original goal of Felda when it was established on July 1, 1956, namely for the socio-economic upliftment of the people.

"We will look at social and welfare problems and the development of new industries and entrepreneurial activities," he said in a special interview with Bernama at Menara Felda here.

Shahrir, who is also Johor Bahru Member of Parliament (MP), was announced as new Felda chairman, replacing Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, who completed his tenure on Jan 6.

While making the announcement, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the appointment of Shahrir, who had extensive experience in government, was in line with the government's desire to enhance the Felda leadership.

Shahrir said among the immediate measures to be implemented was to set up an inspectorate aimed at identifying problems and potential development opportunities in Felda schemes throughout the country.

"This unit will report to me about the settlers' farms which need to be restored, how to solve the problems, and so on," said Shahrir, who was once the chairman of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB)

The unit would be composed of related agencies, including Felda and MPOB.

Special attention would be given to develop settlers' farms as it was the main source of income to improve their living standard.

Shahrir would begin his tour in Felda Jengka tomorrow to gather information from settlers, so that issues could be resolved immediately.

He would be meeting with leaders in the scheme and see the progress of houses for second generation settlers in Felda Padang Piol, Jerantut.

"We want to see which units are ready. This is because in the first phase of the pilot project, we gave six packages to the contractors. Some homes have ben completed, while some have been abandoned."

He will also meet with Felda settlers in Bukit Batu, Kulai, on Jan 21, during the 'Kami Anak Felda' programme.

Shahrir said he will try to dispel the confusion among certain quarters over the difference between Felda and Felda Global Ventures (FGV).

"The problem with Felda is more of perception and misunderstanding. Many people cannot distinguish between FGV, a company listed on Bursa Malaysia, and Felda, the land authority.

"The misunderstanding and confusion is not only among the settlers themselves, but also those considered as world business leaders," he said.
