25/11/2016 (New Straits Times) - Indonesia's palm oil output is expected to drop 15 per cent to 22.5 million tonnes in 2016, said Indonesian Palm Oil Producers Association (Gapki) chairman Joko Supriyono.

“It is very important for Indonesia, especially on a government-to-government platform, to encourage more demand for palm oil from our traditional customers,” he said.

Joko was addressing some 1,300 delegates at the 12th Indonesia Palm Oil Conference (IPOC).

This year's participation has widened to more than 30 countries.

The Indonesian Oil Palm Producers Association, or Gabungan Pengusaha Kelapa Sawit Indonesia (Gapki), is hosting the world's biggest annual oil palm conference, starting yesterday.

Chairperson of IPOC 2016, Mona Surya, reportedly said this year's conference carries the theme 'Harmonisation between Market, Market and State Interests'.

"There are six million households in Indonesia whose livelihoods depend on oil palm planting.

That means there are more than 24 million people who are making a living from this sector," she said at the opening ceremony this morning.

Mona vows that through positive campaigns, the public will come to see how much this sector contributes to Indonesia's economy.

The growing industry is raking in the most foreign earnings via exports.

"In 2015, the export contribution was US$18.5 billion, the biggest contributor to the national export forex reserves," Mona said.

The 12th IPOC and the 2017 Price Outlook is a forum for business senior executives and policymakers in Indonesia to formulate new strategies to solve difficulties oil palm planters face.
