19/02/2016 (The Star) - Direct selling distributor Hong Yean Ling used to think that all there was to palm oil was cooking oil.

After taking part in The Star Online’s PalmWiz 2015 contest, Hong is now knowledgeable about this versatile commodity and its myriad uses.

“Before PalmWiz, I thought palm oil was used mainly as cooking oil. Now, I have learnt that every part of the palm tree can be used in various industries, from fertiliser to biodiesel.

“What amazes me is the health benefits of palm oil. Palm oil contains a significant amount of tocotrienols which are effective in helping to prevent and treat serious degenerative diseases like cancer, stroke-induced injuries, diabetes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease,” she said.

Hong, 48, from Johor Baru, is the top winner of PalmWiz 2015. She won an iPhone 6, one of three grand prizes.

The other two grand prizes were won by Loo Ting Siong (one iPad Air) and Kevin Lee (one iPad Mini), both from Kuala Lumpur.

Five main prizes were won by Andrew Lye, Poon Swee Hong, Angela Lee (all from the Klang Valley), Daryl Tan (Klang), and Jackie Teh (Penang). Each of them received one Huawei P8 Lite smartphone.

All the grand and main prizes came with one-year free subscription to The Star ePaper. Sixty consolation prize winners also received free The Star ePaper for one year.

PalmWiz 2015 ran from October to December last year.

A total of 1,472 people took part in the online contest, in which they were required to answer daily questions pertaining to palm oil based on past articles on the commodity published by The Star.

The PalmWiz2015 contest was an initiative by Star Media Group Berhad to educate Malaysians on palm oil which is the country’s leading agricultural export.

It also features the importance of palm oil to the nation’s economy as well as to highlight the wide and various uses of palm oil, in edible as well as non-edible products.

From the articles in PalmWiz 2015, Hong also learnt that the smear campaigns by Western countries against palm oil are to protect their own vegetable oil industry.

“We need to counter this by promoting the health benefits of palm oil and highlighting the sustainable planting methods practised by Malaysian planters,” she said.

Hong has now switched to cooking with palm oil for her husband and 12-year-old son.
