26/01/2016 (Bernama) - The owners of oil palm plantations are encouraged to breed cattle and free range chicken hybrids in their farm, says Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He said cattle breeding would give advantage to breeders such as increasing beef, while cow dung could be used as fertiliser for the oil palm plantation.

He said the success of the Ladang Rakyat Sdn Bhd in Cheneh near here, where cattle and chicken were bred was such an example.

"This concept should be extended to other oil palm plantations nationwide," he told reporters after visiting a farm belonging to the company here Saturday.

Ahmad Shabery, who is also Kemaman member of parliament said the breeding of free range chicken hybrids would also give higher income to the breeders as the price could reach up to RM18 per kilogramme.

He said the ministry would be working with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute and Department of Veterinary Services to extend such livestock breeding, while the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority would act as an agency for promotion and marketing purposes.
