Cattle in Palm to Optimise Land Use?

10/12/2015 (Daily Express) - Heads turned when a huge herd of cattle grazing inside an oil palm plantation near Sukau caught visitor attention.

Whose plantation it was no one was sure.

But suddenly, detestation of oil palm as a mono crop changed somewhat.

'Resource Optimisation' is the bright idea instrumental for a bit of this more likable landscape, Daily Express heard.

For instance, Sabah Government-linked Sawit Kinabalu has an Integrated Cattle Farming programme to optimise land use.

Notice the huge herd is grazing in sunlit young palms with plenty of grasslands in between palms.

Sawit Kinabalu argues that this epitomise their resource optimisation programme - a partial biological weeds control mechanism plus beef production.

A vision is to become the leading cattle and beef producer in Sabah, through integrated, sustainable, environmentally friendly approach – all laudable objectives.

Sawit also claims that in doing so, they adhere strictly to the guides set by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board and the Department of Veterinary Services and Industry.

In pursuit of these high ambitions, Sawit maintains a nuclear breed of pure Brahman bulls and top notch breeders. How far it has prospered in terms of these high objectives isn't sure.

But it is certainly a stunning sight to see such a large congregation of cattle on the way to Sabah's hottest or world famous eco or wildlife destination.

Daily Express spent December 1-3 checking on the herd.

December 1, they were all grazing thick grassland.

December 2, they were still around, some of them busy mating.

December 3 morning, the whole grassland gone and the cows all lying down chewing the cud!

December 3 afternoon, the whole herd disappeared!

Reminder of a nomadic lifestyle!
