DOHA (Qatar), Jan 22 (Bernama) -- Alami Vegetable Oil Products Sdn Bhd(AVOP) has re-established its foothold in Iraq by resuming its RM5 millioncontract to supply cooking oil to the country.
"It's not much, really. The contract was signed before the latest war inIraq under the United Nation's Oil for Food Programme," said GroupExecutive Director Jamil Harun via telephone from the Kuwait InternationalFair Grounds where AVOP is participating in the Rebuild Iraq Expo from Jan19 to 23.
The manufacturer of palm oil products had earlier established an office inBaghdad in 1998.
"I myself went to close it three months before the (latest) war brokeout," Jamil said.
Expressing disappointment with the turn-out on the first three days of theexpo, Jamil said: "We are looking at legitimate, substantial contracts orjoint ventures with Iraqi businessmen, not small-time border trade.
"The Iraqi businessmen and Government officials should come and see theexpo for themselves.
"I hope contracts are granted to individual companies based on genuinemerit and not based on countries," he added, voicing a common sentimentamong various quarters.
Ain Medicare customer representative Shuhaimi Hussin said his standreceived about 20 enquiries in the first three days.
"We were expecting more Iraqi businessmen to come during the weekend(Thursday and Friday)," he said, conceding that the sheer magnitude of theexpo of 1,450 exhibitors spread across 38,000 square meters could be areason why visitor numbers appeared sparse.
The manufacturer of injected and intravenous medical products is lookingfor reliable agents or joint venture partners in either Dubai or Kuwait tohelp it penetrate not just the Iraqi market but throughout West Asia.
Leader Cable Industry Bhd's representative Kamarul Zaman, meanwhile,reported "increasingly better" visitor queries over the first three daysof the expo.
"Better in terms of both quantity and quality," he said.
"The latest query we received today was from a Bahraini visitor who wasinterested in getting supplies of high tension cables.
"Hopefully the queries will translate into orders," he said.
