26/10/2015 (AmeriPublications) - The TPP would eliminate or reduce tariffs on Canadian products like pork, canola oil, and wheat in Pacific Rim countries such as Japan and Vietnam.

Mr Ziebell said while changes to tariffs and quotas would also be made by the United States, Canada and Mexico, the scope of these cuts by the North American trio was unlikely to be large given significant opposition from the Canadian dairy industry in particular. Under the agreement, she said, 99.6 percent of products could be exported to those countries without any tariff.

For her part, Hillary is locked in an unexpectedly tight race for the Democrat nomination for President against Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT). It embraces the biggest trade zone in the world, spanning four continents and representing 40 per cent of the world’s economy.

However, a summary was released soon after the agreement was reached in Atlanta earlier this month. But even though seven of the partner countries are on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, TPP is just not an Asia deal.

Although Obama had campaigned for office in 2008 on the promise of renegotiating existing free trade treaties that were costing United States workers millions of jobs, like NAFTA, and promised not to introduce new treaties, he quickly embraced, pushed, and signed new free trade treaties with Latin America (Panama, Colombia) and Asia (South Korea).

Among the industries that stand to benefit from the TPP are electronics, chemical products, palm oil, and rubber exporters. Critics of the RCEP have been quick to dismiss the pact as aiming at lower standards compared to the TPP, and as focused too heavily on relatively unambitious tariff barrier reductions.

“Their interaction with other trade agreements is a complex issue so you will need more trade law advice as a result of these, not less”. The agreement upgrades NAFTA, putting environmental protections at the core of the agreement, and making those obligations fully enforceable through the same type of dispute settlement as other obligations. As such, the TPP countries have agreed to ensure access to telecommunications facilities under fair and reasonable terms, to allocate scarce resources (such as frequencies) in a non-discriminatory manner, and to be transparent in their regulatory process. Independents favored TPP by 41 percent-35 percent.

And TPP cracks down on ozone-depleting substances as well as ship pollution of the oceans, all while promoting cooperative efforts to address energy efficiency. USBIC President Kevin Kearns explained the brave stance taken by these 54 House Members: The establishment Republican Party continues to support so-called free trade agreements without exception.

While this could hurt local players, it could also benefit local consumers.

Co-operation with China can strengthen the UK’s position within the EU, and to shape the landscape for a new global economic order that would serve the UK’s national interest. This preferential access to partner markets could present the country with a competitive advantage over those ASEAN members not party to the TPP. Examples of discrimination include a government illegally confiscating or nationalising an investor’s business assets.

Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Costa Rica have also expressed strong interest in becoming TPP members, which would create more open trade and additional market opportunties for u.S. grains. In 2014, the United States exported $89 billion in automotive products to TPP countries.

That’s a shame, because the TPP would do a lot of good for a lot of people. Indeed, since 2011 Obama has pledged to reaffirm the natural vocation of the American power in the region based on the elaboration of the Rebalance to Asia strategy, and strongly characterised by a large range of diplomatic, military, and strategic initiatives. She also said the agreement lacked strong language prohibiting currency manipulation.

American companies that export are small and medium-sized businesses, less than 5 percent of all American small businesses export. When you look more closely, agriculture will gain little from access to Japan’s market, no doubt because the opening to that market is very limited and long delayed.

I’m told by federal and provincial officials that at this stage, the United States isn’t even taking our calls on the softwood lumber agreement, which Canada and B.C. want extended. The Canada-India Foundation has urged Trudeau to visit New Delhi and forge an economic partnership agreement, as well as a foreign investors protection pact.
