Aggressive Marketing To Increase China's Consumption Of Palm Oil
15/09/2015 (Bernama) - The Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities is undertaking aggressive marketing of Malaysian palm oil to the population in China.
Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said palm oil was currently widely used in food industry namely specialty fats, cooking oils/blended cooking oils, instant noodles and fried products.
"It is time to bring it to Chinese home and we are aiming for 40 per cent of the households here to use palm oil," he told reporters after opening the third Palm Oil Health and Nutrition Forum here Monday.
Noting that China was a growing market and a platform to grow Malaysian palm oil industry, Uggah urged the Chinese people to become palm oil ambassadors to promote and explain the nutrition values of the edible oil.
He said total Chinese consumption of palm oil stood at six million tonnes and the ministry's target was to achieve 70 per cent market penetration of the total vegetable oil consumption.
However, Uggah said nutrition issues were the biggest challenge as there were still sceptics trying to halt the use of palm oil in their industries.
"We have to overcome this and we plan to do a strategic study in China. The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) would access the palm oil industry's contribution to China in terms of employment, multiple effects of businesses, facilities and supply chain as well as shipping," he added.
Uggah said China-Malaysia trade was expected to reach US$160 billion by 2017 and the palm oil segment would be a major driver amid its acceptance among the Chinese people.
The Palm Oil Health and Nutrition Forum is jointly organised by Malaysian Palm Oil Board, MPOC and China's Lanzhou University Nutrition and Health Research Centre to disseminate latest information on palm oil and its nutritional benefits.
