23/07/2015 (AllAfrica.com) - A section of farmers on Bugala Island engaging in oil palm growing have threatened to cut down their plantations, claiming that the crop is not fetching much returns as anticipated.

The farmers claim, many of them who planted oil palm in Kalangala District under a private arrangement have not enjoyed profits from the cash crop four years since they started harvesting the crop. According to the farmers, they are now pondering replacing oil palm trees with coffee and rice which they claim are more profitable.

During a farmers' meeting held at the district headquarters on Monday, their representative, Mr Diamond Chanchu, said a person with a 40-acre oil palm plantation earns less than Shs1m which is below what a coffee farmer earns.
