14/05/2015 (PIA) – About 50,000 hectares of idle land in Northern Mindanao particularly in Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental will become productive after Malaysia’s biggest Oil Palm producer, Felda Global Ventures (FGV) and Philippines’ Bali Oil Palm Produce Corporation (BOPPC) signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (MOC) on 11 May 2015 at Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.

Witnessed by various government agencies, local government units, the business and agriculture sector, non-government agencies, academe and media, the MOC will define the areas of partnership and collaboration between FGV and BOPPC in developing Region 10 as FGV’s base to develop and grow the oil palm industry in Mindanao.

Swaminathan Palaniappan, Executive Vice President/Head of Research and Development and Agricultural Services of FGV said that the MOC signing is a milestone and sets out the understanding and intention by both parties to explore the possibility of collaborating with each other in agricultural related products and services.

He said that FGV Agricultural Services is committed to deliver the first oil palm seeds to the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and BOPPC this year.

“We are waiting for the import permit to be issued by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) here,” Palaniappan said.

FGV will deliver 110,000 DxP or high quality planting materials oil palm germinated seeds to PCA and 1,000,000 DxP oil palm generated seeds to BOPPC to start in June.

However, they also looking into collaboration on training on nursery and plantation management which would deal with Good Agronomic Practices, leading to the production of sustainable palm oil and collaboration with their support services such as Laboratory and GIS Services.

According to Manuel Andres Boniao, chairman of BOPCC that they have identified an area, approximately three to five hectares in Valencia where they will grow the seedlings. They will start first in Bukidnon; areas will include Maramag, Quezon, Don Carlos, Kalilangan, Talakag, Pangantucan and Kadingilan.

In fact, he said that PCA granted the Central Mindanao University (CMU) P8million for a nursery including training on crop modelling farm and intercropping, among others.

He said that they will partner with land owners, provide the seedling and will have a market agreement.

Boniao said that for the Palm Oil farm to be sustainable, intercropping must be done. It can be planted together with coffee and banana among others.

Possible income for this farm is P150,000 per hectare per year and a minimum of three years before harvesting.
