30/04/2015 (The Star) - Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV) is aiming to enhance its current safety practises to Oil and Gas (O&G) industry standard to create a safer workplace as safety and health is a central emphasis for the organisation.

FGV group president and chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Emir Mavani Abdullah said the target to achievable through various improvements at all levels of its operations.

“We are improving tremendously. The number of occupational related fatalities were reduced from 13 in 2010 to four in 2014 on the back of lower occupational accidents cases from 424 in 2011 to 351 in 2014,” he added.

Furthermore, Emir noted that lower accidents would translate to increased productivity, reducing the loss of working days and costs in occupational accidents.

Meanwhile, he said the group has taken proactive steps to increase the number of Safety and Health certified officers on a ratio of one to every 500 employees, marking the group as the biggest number of HSE champions compared to other palm oil companies worldwide.

Moving forward, FGV’s strategy is to create the plantation safety supervisor posts in around 250 operational premises.  This is similar to site safety supervisors which are compulsory to construction and engineering industries

For the current financial year, the group is pursuing OHSAS 18001 certification and focusing on tightening the standard operating procedures on high-risk activities.

“We are also benchmarking to international standards, industry codes of practices, and the oil and gas industry, which is well known for their high safety standards,” Emir said.
