Indonesia, Russia To Boost Cooperation
04/02/2015 (Bernama) - Indonesia and Russia are keen to boost cooperation in various sectors as they commemorated 65 years of diplomatic relations on Tuesday, Indonesia's Antara news agency reported.
"The commemoration acts as a momentum to deepen bilateral cooperation which has been well established to date," Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said in a press release on Tuesday.
The president said bilateral relations between Russia and Indonesia have grown stronger based on the values of friendship, equality, mutual respect and understanding.
"We realise that the potential for cooperation can be taken further not only in regional but global forums," he said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed fast growing cooperation between both countries including in new development sectors which were agreed by the two presidents on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Beijing several months ago.
"I want to highlight Russia's readiness to develop constructive cooperation to enhance bilateral relationship. This is a response to accommodate the interests of Russia and Indonesia to guarantee stability and security in Asia-Pacific," he said.
Two-way trade reached US$1.69 billion in 2010 with main export commodities including palm oil, electronic products, tea, coffee, cigarettes and clothing.
Indonesia's main imports from Russia were weaponry, iron and steel, fertilisers, aluminum and aircraft.
Diplomatic ties between both countries were established on Feb 3, 1950.
