Thailand to Plant More Oil Palm for Consumption and Energy Usage
15/12/2014 (Thailand National News Bureau) – The Office of Agricultural Economics has developed strategies for four economic crops, setting a goal to expand oil palm plantations from 4.5 million to 7.5 million Rai.
Secretary-General of the Office of Agricultural Economics Lersak Riewtrakunphaibun said a subcommittee on economic crop strategies had approved the strategies for four economic crops. The strategy on palm oil and oil palm for the years 2015-2026 focused on setting goals in terms of production and marketing. It also emphasized on creating a balance between demand and supply, zoning oil palm plantations as well as developing new products to increase value of the produce, said Mr Lersak.
The increase in oil palm plantations from 4.5 million to 7.5 million Rai is expected to raise production from 3.2 ton/Rai to 3.5 ton/Rai. The strategy also seeks to promote domestic palm oil for consumption and as an alternative energy.
