10/12/2014 (Bernama) - The Malaysian Palm Oil Board's (MPOB) seminar for Pakistan Customs officials aims to impart important information on Malaysian palm oil quality and further strengthen the edible oil's presence in the market.

Malaysia's Consul-General in Karachi, Abu Bakar Mamat, said the Malaysian government has an important role to play in providing policy guidance by establishing rules and legislation that incorporated quality and food safety for the palm oil products.

"It is the responsibility of MPOB to share with importers the good conduct and practices of the Malaysian palm oil industry to ensure that the palm oil products complied with the contractual quality specifications in order to safeguard the interests of the buyers," he said at the opening of MPOB-Pakistan Customs Seminar 2014 in Karachi, Pakistan on Tuesday.

Also present were MPOB Licensing and Enforcement Division's Director, Muslim Imam Amat Samsudin, Director-General of Training Research (Customs) Karachi, Ghulam Ahmed as well as MPOB's regional manager Fairuz Hidzir.

Among the papers presented were on Malaysian Palm Oil Industry, Malaysian Palm Oil Quality Assurance, MPOB (Quality) Regulations 2005 -- Enforcement of Quality Control Practices and Malaysian Palm Oil Storage and Handling.

He said efforts had been put in by the country, industry and MPOB to ensure that Malaysian palm oil remained as the major product in Pakistan edible oil industry.

Abu Bakar said this to Bernama via telephone call from Karachi.

Pakistan remains a very large consumer of vegetable oils and fats and Malaysia places great importance on it.

In 2013, Pakistan imported over 1.4 million tonnes of palm products from Malaysia valued at over US$1 billion at that time.

From January to October, Malaysia has exported over 800,000 tonnes.
