08/09/2014 (Bernama) - Emerging markets and developing countries hold huge potentials for palm oil applications in the food sector, said Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

Uggah said the emerging markets and developing countries included those in Asia, parts of the African continent as well as Central and Eastern Europe.

"Malaysia will continue to undertake measures to strengthen existing and explore new markets for palm oil," he was quoted as saying in the 34th Palm Oil Familiarisation Programme.

He said palm oil supplied more than one third of the global edible vegetable oil demand.

"Malaysia alone accounts for slightly over 10 per cent, or 18.78 million tonnes, out of the total global production of 189.7 million tonnes of oils and fats in 2013," he said.

Uggah said Malaysian palm oil registered a share of 24 per cent in the export trade of oils and fats and 41.1 per cent in the global palm oil trade.

"All these were recorded utilising around five million hectares of land area which was less than two per cent of the 265 million ha of total global area under oilseed crops in 2013," he said.
