SATREPS Launching Ceremony and Workshop
 
17/07/2014 (Bernama) - It is with great pleasure we announce the SATREPS Launching Ceremony and Workshop to be held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on 18th July, 2014. The event serves as an official kick-off of the project, with the launching ceremony and workshop organized to officiate and promote the project amongst all stakeholders including the participating agencies, Sabah State Government, palm oil millers, investors and public at large. It is hoped that this will be a key event and enable the project to begin on a high note with a common understanding and strong collaboration from all parties. SATREPS Overview
 
Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development or 'SATREPS' is a Japanese government program that promotes international joint research targeting global issues. Recognising the fact that global challenges cannot be met by a single country or region acting on its own, engagement with the international community is essential. To address these issues, SATREPS works through three-to-five year projects involving partnerships between researchers in Japan and researchers in developing countries. SATREPS projects are expected to lead to outcomes with potential for practical utilisation, and to enhance research capacity in the developing country. The program is a collaboration between two Japanese government agencies: the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
 
SATREPS Project
 
Being the biggest contributor to Malaysia’s Gross National Income (GNI) from the agriculture sector, the palm oil industry produces the largest amount of biomass, estimated at 83 million dry tonnes of solid biomass, and about 60-70 million tonnes of palm oil mill effluent (POME) in 2012. Most of the solid biomass is simply disposed off, either being burnt to fuel the boiler or used for mulching at the plantation. POME is currently treated through an anaerobic and aerobic treatment system with treated effluent discharged to the river. The current practice is somehow unfavourable for biodiversity conservation. At present, efficient utilisation of the biomass is not a common practice at the mill. It is hypothesized that appropriate treatment of POME and efficient utilisation of oil palm biomass could contribute positively on the biodiversity, including microbial diversity. In this project, we would like to propose a zero emission concept at the palm oil mill, by introducing appropriate technologies for effective utilisation of the biomass and treatment of POME. Three major resources currently being wasted at the palm oil mill, i.e. solid biomass, liquid biomass (POME) and steam will be appropriately utilised to achieve the zero emission concept. Steam produced through burning of oil palm biomass is used as a source of energy at the palm oil mill, however it is currently over-produced due to inefficient burning of the solid biomass. Herewith, we would like to propose the utilisation of the steam for pretreatment of biomass. The integration of the three resources is foreseen to produce value-added products which would contribute to a sustainable green industry.

Thus, the SATREPS project 'Promotion of Green Economy with Palm Oil Industry for Biodiversity Conservation', an international collaborative effort between Japan and Malaysia, will address the above issue. The participating agencies involved in the project are as listed below:
