Sourcing Palm Oil
24/06/2014 (Confectionery Production) - Mondelēz has announced that it will revise plans on how it sources palm oil in a bid to address deforestation.
Greenpeace forest campaigner, Annisa Rahmawati, responded: “With Greenpeace and its supporters having already moved consumer giants like P&G to begin cleaning their supply chains, the momentum for clean palm oil is undeniable. But while MondelÄ“z’s new policy is part of this progress and we welcome the commitment to remove suppliers who don’t deliver, it has a major flaw: it does not define what a forest actually is.
“Known as the High Carbon Stock approach, this definition is already widely used and being implemented by the likes of GAR, Wilmar, Asia Pulp & Paper, and members of the Palm Oil Innovation Group. MondelÄ“z must demand its suppliers protect all forests and peat land using the HCS approach. Either way, the bulldozers must stop and until they do, MondelÄ“z can’t guarantee its Oreos are deforestation free.
“It’s one thing to have a policy on paper and it’s another to actually see change on the ground – these are the standards to which Greenpeace will hold companies accountable.”
