14/06/2014 (Borneo Post) - The Malaysian Palm Oil Association (MPOA) Sabah Branch committee, led by its chairman Tun Haji Mohammad Tarmizi Hj Taufek, paid a courtesy call on State Forestry director Datuk Sam Mannan at the Sabah Forestry Department headquarters here yesterday.

The objectives of the courtesy call were to introduce the association’s committee members and to exchange notes on areas of concern by both parties pertaining to the development of sustainable oil palm with social and environmental requirements.

The meeting ended with a recommendation for both parties to formalize relations through forging a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will be explored and entered before end of the year.

Some of the potential areas of collaboration include restoration of the degraded riparian along the Kinabatangan river, creation of ‘new’ forest land through the concept of No Net Loss, and joint visibility programme on the documentation of conservation efforts by members of the association.

MPOA has a membership of 29 companies with established oil palm plantations of about 560,000 hectares involving 274 estates and 36 oil palm mills throughout the state.
