11/06/2014 (VibeGhana) - The chief of Asuokwaw, Barima Kwame Ofori the second, has appealed for the provision of a processing factory for the production of palm oil and palm kernel oil, to boost business in the area.

The Chief noted that, because of the abundance of the raw material in the area, there are many local producers, but lacked a processing equipment and decent production centres.

He explained that, a processing factory could help the local producers to increase productivity, as well as create more employment for the people.

Barima Ofori made the appeal at a durbar organized in honour of a delegation from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the out-going Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Julius Debrah to the Upper West Akyem District.

He pledged to offer land for the project when considered.

Osaberima Asare Oduro, chief of Adeiso, called for support for gari producers in the area, to promote and facilitate local production to create employment.

The Acting Missions Director of USAID, Mr Andy Karas, expressed the desire of the United States government to support small-scale businesses, especially in agriculture, to promote economic growth, and increase the productivity of raw materials.

Mr. Julius Debrah, the out-going Eastern Regional Minister, said the Eastern Regional Co-ordinating Council(ERCC) was soliciting support from the USAID for local businesses, particularly in agriculture production in the region.

He said, marketing of farm produce remained a challenge in the area, and therefore needed to partner organizations that would create opportunities for them to expand their productivity, to improve the livelihood of rural dwellers .

Mr Ohene Bekoe, District Chief Executive for Upper West Akim, said the district is known for the production of palm oil, palm kernel oil and gari, for both the local and international markets, and pledged to utilize any assistance given by USAID to the benefit of the stakeholders and the economy.

Earlier, the delegation had visited Sutapong, a farming community in the Upper Manya Krobo District, and Asuokaw, Mepom and Adeiso in the Upper West Akim District. GNA
