Peru's Agricultural Exports Up 24.3 Per Cent Jan-April

09/06/2014 (Bernama) - The value of agricultural exports from Peru totaled US$ 1.4 billion in the first four months of 2014, representing a 24.3 percent increase over the same period last year, the country's Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) said.

Data released by Minagri's Economic and Statistical Studies Office, showed that much of the growth in that period was led by strong sales of fresh grapes,quinoa, mangos and cacao beans.

Other key exports were preparations used in animal feeding, which saw an increase of US$ 11 million from a year earlier; white sugar, up US$10mn y-o-y, fresh fruits, up US$9mn ; palm oil, up US$8mn; mandarins, up US$7mn; and cacao butter, up US$6mn.

Meanwhile, non-traditional agricultural exports accounted for 92.6 percent (US$ 1.29 billion) of total agricultural shipments during the January-April stretch, thus posting a growth of 24.5 percent over the same period a year ago (1,04 billion).

Traditional agricultural exports reached $104 million, an 21.9 percent increase compared to the same period in 2013.

Likewise, the report reveals that between January and April, Peru exported agricultural products to 133 countries with the United States being the main destination market.

The U.S. had a share of 23.9 percent in total exports and was followed by the Netherlands (14.0%), China (5.8%), Spain (5.0%), Ecuador (4.8%) and Hong Kong (4.5%).
