09/06/2014 (Nigerian Ttibune) - Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State has planted more than 5,000 oil palm seedlings in an effort to boost agriculture.

The council has also established a poultry farm and begun a tractor hiring service at a low cost to farmers.

The chairman of the council, Mr Godwin Aigbodion, made this known in Sabongida – Ora, Edo State while answering questions from journalists.

Aigbodion said the projects were the initiatives of his administration, aimed at agriculture development and improved internal revenue generation.

“We have so far planted more than 5,000 oil palm seedlings;  right now, they are ripe for  sale, and people are coming to buy at subsidised rates,’’ he said.

Aigbodion said that his administration embarked on the oil palm project due to the fertile land in the council area.

“We have established a poultry farm; we intend to go into production of chicken and fish.

“We have approved funds for the Agriculture Department to buy chemicals to distribute to farmers in Owan West.

“We are in collaboration with the state commissioner for agriculture to help farmers in the council area,’’ he added.

Aigbodion said the tractor hiring service was aimed at assisting farmers in Owan West to access tractors to plough and harrow their farms at minimum costs.
