14/05/2014 (SpyGhana.com) - The University of Ilorin, said on Monday that Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Minister of Finance will on Thursday launch the institution’s oil palm plantation.

The institution’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, in a statement made available to newsmen, said that the project would enhance the university’s mandate of teaching, research and community service.

The statement said that the first phase of the oil palm plantation project would cover about 1,000 hectares.

It said that the project would provide training and laboratory facilities for students in the Faculties of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

It added that these facilities would also be provided for the Departments of Forestry, Plant Biology and other related disciplines.

At maturation, the plantation would also be a good source of internally generated revenue for the university, the statement said.

“Already, hybrid breed oil palm seedlings have been procured from the National Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), Benin City, Edo State.

“This is to ensure the successful take-off and ultimate success of the project described as highly profitable,” it said.

The statement said that the much-awaited personal computer tablets which the university management promised the institution’s 100 level students would also be distributed at a separate ceremony on the same day.

It said that the PC Tablet was one of the initiatives of the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, to enhance learning and upgrade the ICT capacity of the students.

It added said that the tablets would have all the necessary accessories, including information about the university and students’ course work already uploaded and installed.
