18/04/2014 (Bernama) - Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV) strengthened its Turkish connections through two significant deals, marking the maiden entry of its high-grade graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNT) into the world market, while forging ties to supply its crude palm kernel oil (CPKO).

The exchange of the memorandum of agreement between FGV's new company, FGV Cambridge Nanosystems (FGV-CNS) and Nanokomp Ileri Teknoloji Malzemeleri Arge Dan Ins San Tic Ltd Sti (Nanokomp) was witnessed by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Ankara today.

FGV Chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad and FGV Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Mohd Emir Mavani Abdullah were also present to witness the document exchange ceremony.

FGV-CNS was represented by its Director, Dr Krzysztof Koziol while Nanokomp was represented by Managing Director, Onder Guney.

FGV-CNS, a start-up from the University of Cambridge, is the first company in the world to pioneer and produce high-grade and high-volume graphene and carbon nanotubes from by-products of oil palm plantation, such as methane gas, supplied by FGV.

"We have found that the graphene and CNTs produced by FGV-CNS are of superior quality and exceed the standards of graphene and CNTs currently available in the market," Guney said in a statement.

He added that Nanokomp was confident that FGV-CNS is able to produce graphene and CNTs on a large commercial scale, providing the company the assurance of a consistent and sustainable supply.

Meanwhile, an exchange of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) documents was also conducted between FGV and Evyap Sabun Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Evyap Group Turkey.

Evyap Sabun Malaysia invested US$200 million in an integrated oleochemical plant in Tanjung Langsat, Johor, making it the first foreign direct investment by a Turkish company in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Mohd Emir said FGV, as the largest producer of CPKO, was very keen to work together with Evyap to supply about 1,000 metric tonnes of palm oil for its oleochemical plant based on their requirements and needs.

"We are establishing one of the largest oleochemical and soap production plants of the world in Malaysia. This plant is not only the largest in Malaysia, but also the largest Turkish investment in the region," Evyap Holding Managing Director, Mehmed Evyap, said.

FGV made its first presence in Turkey in 2008 through its joint venture FELDA IFFCO Sdn Bhd.

Its subsidiary, FELDA IFFCO Gida Sanayi Ve Ticaret A.S, which operates in Izmir, processes, refines and packs edible soft oils such as sunflower oil, corn oil, soybean oil, palm oil, canola oil and olive oil.
