01/04/2014 (Bernama) - More than 77 percent of the 442,094 workers in the oil palm plantation sector in the country are foreign workers.

Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Douglas Uggah Embah said, based on statistics until December from the Malaysia Palm Oil Board (MPOB), it clearly showed the dependence of the sector on foreign workers.

In this regard, he said the ministry sought to overcome the problem by training more locals especially among the youths for the sector.

"Using local manpower will reduce dependence on foreign workers. The ministry will train more local youths towards this end," he said in his speech during a function at the Malaysia Oil Palm Industry Training Centre, Keratong, here, today.

A total 176 trainees who completed their training on Feb 28 received the Institute of Malaysian Plantation and Commodities certificates and Malaysia Skills Certificate for Mechanised Operator Course for Plantations (KOML), during the function.

His speech text was read by MPOB chairman Datuk Ar Wan Mohammad Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad.

He said courses such as KOML was the best medium for youths keen to find experience in the plantation and entrepreneurship sectors.

"Currently, business opportunities in the oil palm industry especially the plantation sector is very wide.

"In this regard, entrepreneurs in plantation mechanisation had the potential to develop their business and spur the growth of the national oil palm industry," he said.

At the same time, he said the effort of the ministry and MPOB to turn out graduates skilled in the oil palm plantation seriously required the support of plantation companies to offer employment opportunities.
