17/01/2014 (Bernama) - Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas says total palm oil exports to Pakistan totalling 1.44 million tonnes in 2012 is set to increase this year on the back of continuing increase in demand.

There was room to increase exports, he said, adding that per capita palm oil consumption in Pakistan is 15 kg currently.

"I'm very confident that the volume will increase in line with sustained positive growth in the country's economy," he told a press conference at the Malaysia-Pakistan Palm Oil Trade Fair and Seminar here Thursday.

Malaysia, the world's second largest palm oil producer, produced 18.78 million tonnes or 34.95 per cent of total palm oil production in 2012, and exported 17.57 million tonnes or 43.1 per cent of the world's palm oil.

Commenting on the outlook for the industry this year, Uggah said the oils and fats business was an exciting period, boosted by sustained growth in demand.

He said industry players should forge partnerships and closer relations to handle many areas of common interest that may face and meet the insatiable and increasingly sophisticated consumer appetite and demand.

"Today's oils and fats business are not just to enable supply to meet demand. The market entities have to be ready to address new demands for high quality products that are healthy, environmentally-friendly and sustainable.

"I can assure you that the Malaysian palm oil industry is committed to ensuring sustainable practices in the production chain," Uggah said.

The Malaysian palm oil industry has always prioritised the need to ensure a balance between nature and developmental needs, have proved to be a reliable and responsible palm oil supplier, he said.

He also witnessed the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Malaysia-based Erafeed Sdn Bhd and Farooq Feeds, Karachi's leading company of cattle dairy feed, to distribute palm-based animal feed in Pakistan.

Also present at the ceremony were Malaysian High Commissioner to Pakistan Dr Hasrul Sani Mujtabar, Malaysia's Consul-General in Karachi Abu Bakar Mamat, Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) Chairman Datuk Lee Yeow Chor.
