Ministry Of Plantation Industries And Commodities: Palm Oil Promotion Visit To Pakistan And Iran 14-21 January 2014

14/01/2014 (Bernama) - YB Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities will be leading the Palm Oil Promotion Mission to Iran and Pakistan from 14 - 21 January 2014. The delegation comprises representatives from the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) and private sector representatives.

The objectives of the visit:

i) Bilateral discussions to strengthen and explore exports of palm oil products with the private sector associations in Pakistan and Iran; and

ii) Explore areas for cooperation between the private sector in Malaysia with their counterparts in Pakistan and Iran.

In Pakistan, YB Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities will officiate the Palm Oil and Trade Seminar (POTS) and launch the MPOB Pocketbook on Palm Oil Uses in the Urdu language. This pocketbook contains information on the palm oil industry in Malaysia and the the use of palm oil products for both food and non-food purposes.
 
During POTS Pakistan, the Minister will also witness the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Erafeed Sdn. Bhd dan Chapri Group di Pakistan. The MoU designates  Chapri Group Pvt. Ltd., the largest importer of palm kernel cake from Malaysia as a main agent to distribute palm-based animal feed produced Erafeed Sdn. Bhd. in Pakistan.
 
In addition, the Minister will also visit Port Qasim Authority to assess the progress of joint venture projects between Malaysian and local companies in the areas of refining. The Minister is also expected to convene a dialogue with members of the Malaysia-Pakistan Business Council during his visit to Pakistan.

In Tehran, Iran the Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities will officiate POTS Tehran and launch MPOB Pocketbook in Persian language, as part of promotion and efforts to strengthen market share of Malaysian palm oil in Iran.

In 2012, Pakistan was Malaysia’s second largest trading partner among the countries in South Asia. Malaysia-Pakistan bilateral trade in 2012 was valued at RM6.5 billion compared to RM8.6 billion in 2011. Exports was valued at RM5.7 billion while imports stood at RM780 billion. Among the commodity products exported, palm oil accounts for the largest export with an export value of RM4.1 billion. Other commodity products exported to Pakistan in 2012 include rubber products valued at RM76.9 million, cocoa products at RM33.8 million and pepper products at RM2.42 million.

Iran is Malaysia’s fourth largest trading partner among the countries in the Middle East. Bilateral trade in Iran in 2012 was recorded at RM4.6 billion compared to RM5 billion in 2011. Exports were valued at RM3.5 billion while imports were valued at RM1.1 billion. Among the commodity products, exports of palm oil was valued at RM1.95 billion. Other commodity products exported to Iran in 2012 include rubber products valued at RM446.6 million, timber products at RM156.1 million and cocoa products at RM36.7 juta.
