23/12/2013 (Bernama) - The Central Terengganu Development Authority (Ketengah) has incurred losses of about RM2 million due to the recent floods after crops from its oil palm plantations could not be collected for processing.

Ketengah general manager, Wan Mat Amin Wan Daud said they had three large plantations in Kemaman, namely Ketengah Perwira, Ketengah Jaya and Ladang Rakyat which were flooded from Dec 2.

"The floods caused 80 per cent of our areas in Dungun and Kemaman to be badly affected involving thousands of hectares. Besides oil palm fruits which could not be collected and processed, there were also newly planted oil palms destroyed by the flood waters.

"Three village houses in Air Puteh, Kemaman were also carried away by the flood waters. However, we have yet to ascertain the total losses," he told reporters after presenting prizes to the winners of the Jelajah Tasik Kenyir fishing competition, here, Sunday.

On the affected houses, Wan Mat Amin said the Rural and Regional Development Ministry had agreed to replace them immediately under the ministry's Housing Assistance Programme (PBR).

He said Ketengah had extended immediate assistance to affected villagers by sending RM50,000 worth of food supplies to the flood relief centres with help from the District Offices and Social Welfare Department.

It also held gotong-royong after the floods to help clean flood-hit homes, he added.

Wan Mat Amin said Ketengah had a flood operations room in Bandar Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, with 100 personnel and members of non-governmental organisations to help the flood victims.
