FG Restates Commitment to Develop Palm Oil Industry
24/09/2013 (THISDAY Live) - The Ministry of State for Industry, Trade and Investment has restated its commitment to develop the palm oil industry in the country, noting that the sector still remains largely untapped.
The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Samuel Ortom, said as a result of this, his ministry would partner the Akwa Ibom State to hold the 1st international palm oil produce conference to hold in October, 2013.
The Minister made this known during the visit of the stakeholders led by the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Martyns Udo-Inyang, in Abuja.
Speaking during the visit, Ortom said the Ministry would synergise with the Akwa Ibom state government and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the success of the conference organised to expose participants to the various investment opportunities in the palm oil sector of the economy.
The Minister hailed the Akwa Ibom State government for its commitment and willingness to host participants from home and abroad to brainstorm on the challenges and the prospect in the sector.
“The Conference will among other things harness the activities of plantation owners, processors, researchers, investors, marketers with a view to synergising their efforts for efficient and effective practice to improve investment opportunities”.
According him, “There is no reason for us to fail on this assignment. Some of those things that would have been a challenge have already being taken care of by the Akwa Ibom state government”.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Organising committee, Mr. Joseph Apanisile, Director, Commodity and Products Inspectorate said that the committee will work closely with the Akwa Ibom state government to ensure the successful hosting of the palm oil conference.
He expressed the hope that “with the calibre of technocrat drawn from the relevant agencies and the organised private sector to strategise on the organisation of the event, we have no doubt that there would be active participation of both local and international stakeholders.”
Apanisile added that the committee would ensure that relevant products and equipment are exhibited during the conference.
Earlier, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Udo-Inyang had assured the committee of the readiness of the state government to host the conference.
He added that they were willing to cooperate with the committee to ensure that it meets up with international standards as relevant stakeholders across the world would attend the conference.
“I am impressed with the quality and diversity of the caliber of stakeholders in the committee. This will ensure success of the event. I believe that in the near future palm produce will replace oil and create jobs, wealth and alleviate poverty in Nigeria”, he stressed.
