PM Strikes Huge Deals in Indonesia
14/08/2013 (Solomon Star) - Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo has struck deals with power-house companies in Indonesia that would see long term economic growth in the Solomon Islands.
Mr Lilo who is currently in Indonesia upon an invitation from Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for a state visit held high-level talks with Indonesia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Golden Agri-Resources (GAR) Ltd Company and Maritim Timur Jaya (Indonesia’s first and largest fisheries industrial estate).
During the meeting with the ICCI, Mr Lilo formally welcomed Indonesian investors into the country to help in the economic growth.
Mr Lilo said he was thrilled that investors in Indonesia have shown grown interest in investing in a small island nation as in the Solomon Islands.
“This is good news for the country and our people,” he said.
Prime Minister Lilo then also met with officials from GAR.
GAR is a multi-national palm oil company which is the leader in high growth palm oil industry in Indonesia.
GAR is also the largest Indonesian plantation group and the second largest palm oil company in the world.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister assured the company officials that his Government was interested in engaging GAR to assess potential sites in the Solomon Islands for the company to establish its company.
“When this is established it will certainly create more jobs for Solomon Islanders to improve their standard of living,” he said.
Prime Minister Lilo said he would be advising authorities at the agricultural ministry to prepare arrangements for the Indonesian team to come to Solomon Islands to start carrying out assessments.
“This is a real opportunity because we have been scouting for credible companies for some time now,” he said.
GAR director Daud Dharsono in response said that they have been eyeing to invest in the Solomon Islands for some time now.
Mr Dharsono also offered to help build schools, clinics and infrastructure as part of their proposed plan.
The GAR director said the company was not only interested in palm oil but also establishing a sugarcane industry in the country.
“We also have sustainability programs that could see this plan achieving long term benefits that should bring more economic growth within the palm oil sector,” he said.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister also held a brief meeting with Maritim Timur Jaya (Indonesia’s first and largest fisheries industrial estate).
Maritim Timur Jaya has indicated its willingness to establish in the Solomon Islands.
“This will certainly bring potential benefits to the Solomon Islands as we are penetrating through boundaries that should benefit our country’s economic growth as well as improving lives of the people,” he said.
Maritim Timur Jaya is the first and largest company in Indonesia in the field of Industrial integrated fisheries management area, which grow and develop together Indonesian government to create a strong field of fisheries, manage marine resources responsibly and to create fishing communities prosperous and independent.
